In the second half of 2017, Dr. Anna Maria BLOCKI, from Charité Universitätsklinikum Berlin, Germany, and Dr. Yangzi JIANG, from the University of Pittsburgh, U.S.A., were invited to be the guest speakers in the seminar series of regenerative therapies on 21 August 2017.
Nowadays, ischemic diseases such as myocardial infarction, chronic wounds and critical limb ischemia have become one of the major challenges imposing huge burden on the global healthcare systems. In view of the unmet need for treatments against ischemic diseases, Dr. BLOCKI focused her research on studying new therapeutic approaches via Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. She then further elaborated her research project on the topic, “Towards Engineering of Bio-instructive Materials for Regenerative Therapies”, and the mechanism of an integrative approach that utilizes scientific studies to decipher the ECM to enable engineering of next-generation.
Subsequent to the talk given by Dr. BLOCKI, Dr. JIANG presented her own research topic on “Osteoarthritis, what can we do? – Past, Present, and Future”, in which Osteoarthritis (OA), is another common chronic illness among the aging population, that affects 65% of those aged above 65 years old. She believed, prevention is always better than cure. Other than prosthetic replacement of joints, she suggested to develop regenerative strategies based on the current progress made in cell-based therapies. Some of the anticipated scientific and clinical challenges were also discussed during the seminar.
