In order to foster the synergistic academic linkage with prestigious institutions in Asia, Dr. Oscar Kuang-Sheng LEE, Distinguished Professor, Institute of Clinical Medicine of the National Yang-Ming University, Taiwan, was invited to pay a visit to the CUHK and to give a seminar of his clinical research project, entitled “Mesenchymal stem cells: from bench to bedside” on 7 Feb 2017.
Dr. LEE as a recognized leader in the research area of stem cells and musculoskeletal research in Taiwan, received a number of important national and international awards and prizes, including New Investigator Recognition Award from the Orthopedic Research Society in 2004, Outstanding Research Award from the Ministry of Science and Technology of Taiwan in 2008 and 2014, and Pride of the Nation Academic Award for Outstanding International Achievement, Taiwan, 2015. It was our great honor to invite Dr. LEE to share with us his latest findings in clinical trials and research.
During his seminar, Dr. LEE pointed out that there were unmet needs for reconstruction of segmental bone defects locally, nationally and globally. Mesenchymal stem cells, therefore, would be the panacea for this issue, instead of the metal implants applied in the past few decades. He continued to discuss with the faculty members from the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS), the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (ORT), the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), etc, on the application of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), adversities encountered and the recent contribution and accomplishment in his study.
